USTA - Northern California
The United States Tennis Association and California PAL have recently partnered to create new youth tennis programs at PAL chapters throughout Northern California. This innovative pilot program takes youth from ages 6 up through high school age and introduces them to the sport of tennis. Using specialized equipment like portable net systems and restricted flight/larger size balls, PAL chapters are able to set up "tennis courts" pretty much wherever there is flat space available, either indoors or outdoors. As the kids improve upon their skills, they can then start making the transition to traditional tennis venues. It is an outstanding program that will be expanding to the rest of the state very soon and California PAL is proud to be working with the USTA on this groundbreaking program.
San Francisco Junior Giants
Junior Giants, the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, is a free, non-competitive and innovative baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-18 years old. Established in 1994, the Junior Giants is a program that gives at-risk kids a meaningful partnership with community-based organizations and provide an alternative to drugs, gangs and crime. The program now serves 20,000 children in 85 leagues across California and into Nevada and Oregon. The Community Fund provides all of the uniforms, equipment, and training necessary to run a league as well as tickets to select Giants games so the youth can experience a Major League Baseball game. Many of our PAL Chapters in Northern and Central California run Junior Giants programs during the Summer and California PAL is pleased to work with the Giants Community Fund to provide feedback and continue to improve the Junior Giants program.
California State Parks
California PAL and the California State Parks enjoy a partnership that allows PAL youth from around the state to enjoy many of the camping, off-highway vehicle and other leadership programs that are offered by the State Parks organization. Some of the programs like FAMCAMP allow California PAL chapters to use full sets of camping equipment to take youth overnight camping at one of the many park locations. The Off-Road PAL's programs is conducted by the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) branch and it gives PAL kids the opportunity to ride ATV, Motocycle or Snowmobile equipment in a safe and supervised environment at a select number of California's many OHV park facilities throughout the state. PAL chapters also are able to participate in the State Parks Outdoor Youth Connection camps that are put on by State Parks personnel at various times of the year.
Children Now is the leading, nonpartisan, umbrella research, policy development, and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting children's health and education in California and creating national media policies that support child development. The organization also leads The Children's Movement of California. California PAL is closely partnered with Children Now to help advocate for the many hot topic issues that affect many of California's youth today. To create positive change in the political landscape will trickle down to our communities and help our PAL chapters fulfill their primary mission of reducing juvenile deliquency and violence that plagues our society today.
