COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

California PAL has collaborated with experts in the fields of college and career preparedness, and workforce development to better prepare our youth for the 21st century workplace and improve their transition into postsecondary education, training, and employment. We aim to help California PAL communities break the cycle of poverty by providing opportunities for economic advancement through education and career development utilizing a powerful combination of technology, mentoring, and training.

Empowering PAL Youth:
Life After High School Conference

A PAL youth’s journey begins at the annual California PAL Life After High School Conference which includes a 4-day, 3-Night conference at Westmont College in Santa Barbara with sessions focused on Life Skills, Business Interviews, College/Career Readiness Workshops, and a College/Career Fair.

Depending on each PAL youth’s ambition, the conference is followed by either Life After High School Destination Success, Life After High School Powered by AKALA or Workforce Development programs at the youths’ local PAL.

Life After High School: Destination Success

Our Life After High School Destination Success collaborations help to establish and foster on-going mentor relationships between PAL youth and officers to create educational and occupational pathways to success.  Destination Success is geared towards youth who have aspirations of success and want to explore their options, whether it’s going directly to college, trade or technical schools, an arts conservatory, joining the armed forces or other post high school opportunities.

Educate California® instructs mentoring officers using the LifePrep Academy™ college/career readiness curriculum to give them the skills and knowledge needed to help PAL youth explore and prepare for their post-high school path.  Be A Mentor provides mentor training and guidance that help PAL officers be effective and responsible mentors and to help youth reach goals set for themselves.

Life After High School:
Powered by AKALA

Our collaboration with AKALA brings the power of mobile app technology to connect PAL chapters and youth to college access networks that help them successfully apply to colleges, explore majors and careers, and identify financial assistance options.  This hands-on interaction helps youth focus on developing core skills such as self-advocacy, time management and research pathways to success.

Workforce Development:
Youth Apprenticeship Readiness Accelerator (YARA)

The California PAL Youth Apprentice Readiness Accelerator (YARA) workforce development program provides PAL youth with pathways to employment through career exploration, workforce training, and opportunities for life-long careers.  It is a unique, forward-thinking workforce development model designed in collaboration with LiUNA Local 585 and a coalition of organizations offering pre-apprenticeship activities and certifications as a pathway to careers in the trades.

The YARA program connects PAL youth with sustainable employment opportunities that meet the hiring needs of local businesses.
